Insanity in Shakespeares Hamlet - The Madness of Hamlet Essay

The Madness of Hamlet    William Shakespeare, in the tragedy Hamlet, designed two characters who exhibit symptoms of madness: Ophelia and the prince. Hamlet states his own madness as intentional, purposeful, for the carrying out of the ghost’s admonition. But does Hamlet’s pretended insanity actually touch on real, actual insanity from time to time, or is it consistent? Phyllis Abrahms and Alan Brody in â€Å"Hamlet and the Elizabethan Revenge Tragedy Formula† consider the madness of the hero to be completely feigned and not real: Hamlet is a masterpiece not because it conforms to a set of conventions but because it takes those conventions and transmutes them into the pure gold of vital, relevant meaning. Hamlet’s feigned madness, for instance, becomes the touchstone for an illumination of the mysterious nature of sanity itself. (44-45) Hamlet’s first words in the play say that Claudius is "A little more than kin and less than kind," indicating a dissimilarity in values between the new king and himself – introducing into the story a psychological problem, a refusal to conform, which lays the groundwork, or previews, the upcoming pretended madness. As the future king of Denmark, the hero is expected to maintain a good working relationship with the present king, Claudius. But this is not so. Even before the apparition of the ghost, Hamlet has a very sour relationship with his uncle and stepfather, Claudius. Manifest Destiny Persuasive Essay By: John Doe During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the United States saw many problems come and go. Some problems were more important than others, however all led to further division of American politics. The most divisive issue in American politics during this time frame was the idea of Manifest Destiny, or territorial expansion. Manifest Destiny was the idea that it was the United States destiny to take over all of North America from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Most of the public was in favor of territorial expansion, though some politicians felt it contradicted the constitution. Strict constructionists were against territorial expansion, while loose constructionists felt expansion was the United States destiny. Strict constructionists centered their platform around the fact that the constitution never directly states that the federal government has the right to acquire land. Those that view the constitution liberally, or loose constructionists, counter that stand by claiming the right of expansion falls under the governments implied powers. Loose constructionists and strict constructionists are the main divisive factor for the United States political parties: the democrats and the whigs. One of the supporters of Manifest Destiny was, democrat, James Polk who served as president from 1844 to 1848. Polk was strongly in favor of expanding the United States to the Pacific. This opinion won him the election of 1844. That year Henry Clay, a well known and loved figure in American politics, ran and was expected to blow, little known, Polk of the charts. The only problem was Clay was nervous about territorial expansion. He did not want was with Mexico and was unsure of the constitutionality of expanding. Polk won because the majority of the public believed in Manifest Destiny. Along with influencing presidential elections, Manifest Destiny played a role in the slavery issue. Entering the mid eighteen hundreds slavery was a very sensitive subject, and some of the bad feelings that caused this sensitivity were caused by territorial expansion. With more lands being acquired the number of slave state and free state representatives in Congress became unbalanced. This caused great distress among the senators and representatives. For instance, free state members of Congress began accusing the slave state members of conspiracies. One such accusation was made by Charles Sumner. He proposed the idea that southerners wanted to acquire more land so they could implant slavery in the territories. With more slave oriented territories that would eventually became slave states, the South would have control of Congress. This is what Sumner called the Slave Power Conspiracy. Slavery stirred up a lot of hard feelings though the slavery issue was not the hottest of the problems associated with territorial expansion. War with Mexico and Great Britain worried many of the people who were against expansion. James Polk had been elected when the wars were on the verge of breaking out. The potential war with Britain was resolved early in Polk presidency. He obviously wanted nothing to do with Britains powerful navy, for he agreed to a compromise that gave the United States far less of Oregon than the public wanted. The Mexico situation was different in that Polk did not have the fear of Mexico that he had of Great Britain. Polk felt a war with Mexico would only prove profitable for the United States, so he inticed the Mexicans to attack. Once Mexico attacked, Polk claimed he had to defend the United States, for Mexico had invaded American territory. Polk claimed, The cup of forbearance had been exhausted. .. Mexico had passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory, and shed American blood upon the American soil. Poetry Analysis – Whoso List to Hunt Essay Poetry Analysis – Whoso List To Hunt â€Å"Whoso List To Hunt† is a Petrarchan sonnet by Thomas Wyatt, which is known as an Italian sonnet, consisting of an octave and a sestet. This sonnet revolves around the themes of unrequited love, sexism, complexity, obsession and passion. Wyatt uses a collection of poetic techniques within the sonnet in order to display the power and desire the man has for the woman. The structure of this sonnet corresponds to a Petrarchan sonnet. This is identified by the rhyming scheme â€Å"abba abba cde cde†. The sonnet is constructed by an octave, which are two quatrains combined then a sestet following after that. â€Å"Whoso List To Hunt† was based in the English Renaissance period during the late 15th century to the mid 17th century. ‘Humanism’ was a movement at the time which displayed the importance of ethics, human dignity, concerns, values and freedom. King Henry VIII had assigned Wyatt as his diplomat whom translated some Italian sonnets and adapted others. Wyatt’s piece â€Å"Whoso List to Hunt† is one of his most well known sonnets, concerning his obsession and infatuation with Anne Boleyn, a woman who later had married King Henry VIII. Nevertheless throughout the sonnet a shift of power and supremacy is altered, where the woman is seen to have the authority leaving the man abandoned and feeble. The first quatrain, Wyatt addresses the readers and pursuers that there is a particular deer (woman), for those who wish to hunt. Wyatt has primarily chosen the animal â€Å"deer† as it links with connotations such as â€Å"agility, femineity, grace and gentleness as well as wild and untamed. The pursuit has seemed to be far too much and has worn the poet out to the point where he has enough so he attempts to abandon the hunt. This is acknowledged particularly in lines 2-4, â€Å"But for me, alas, I may no more. The Vain travail hath wearied me so sore I am of them that farthest cometh behind. † Wyatt has managed to utilise the use of punctuation especiall y in the second line where he has applied commas around the word â€Å"alas† then ending the sentence with a full stop giving the impression that he is breathless and expressing a fatigue status. Another technique used was the use of an assonance, repetition of vowel sounds, which is displayed in line 3, â€Å"vain travailed hath wearied me† once again depicting the hunter’s fatigue by slowing down the line. The poet also believes that many of the suitors seem to be ahead of him (including Henry VIII) and that he is the last of the pursuers, â€Å"that farthest cometh behind†. The tone of the first quatrain is quite negative as it depicts a sad and pessimistic attitude. In the second quatrain, the narrator warns the other suitors of the futility of the hunt. The narrator in this stanza shows strong obsession and passion, demonstrating strong aspects of ‘male desire’. The second quatrain begins with the word â€Å"yet† highlighting the ‘shift’ from the previous quatrain. He has just decided to give up on the hunt nonetheless he fails to withdraw his mind from the deer. This shows that even though he feels hopeless and unattainable this doesn’t stop him from feeling the way he feels about the woman. The poet in lines 5-6 cannot take his fatigued mind off the ‘deer’ as she continues to flee. my wearied mind Draw from the deer, but as she fleeth afore,†. These lines signify his ‘obsession’ of possessing his prey. The use of the poetic term ‘consonance’, repetitions of non-vowel sounds, in line 6, â€Å"Draw from the deer† expresses the reoccurring longing desire and passion for the deer (woman). Another instance in which consonances are used, â€Å"a s she fleeth afore, Fainting I follow. I leave off therefore†. In this line there is an unremitting repetition of the letter â€Å"F† which gives a great indication that the hunter is out of breath and exhausted. When she flees, it quotes, â€Å"fainting I follow†. He can only barely catch up to the wind that follows behind her, so he realises here that the chase is futile. He apprehends the fact that the deer is not welcoming his affection, which refers back to the theme of â€Å"unrequited love†. Wyatt in addition introduces a second ‘metaphor’, â€Å"wind† in which he uses to describe the woman. The â€Å"wind† symbolises agility, freedom and is impossible to capture. The first octave makes out that this was all a wasted hunt, and that the poet is officially unsuccessful. In the closing sestet, the hunter addresses the other suitors who are determined to capture her that they have absolutely no chance and warns them that they’ll suffer deep consequences if they attempt to do so and will spend their after time in vain. In the 11th line, the poet elaborates that the hind is wearing a diamond necklace or collar of some sort with the words engraved in it quoting, â€Å"Noli me tangere, for Caesar’s I am† translated to â€Å"touch me not for I am Caesar’s†. Thus warning all hunters that this particular hind is under ownership of royalty, and if captured, must immediately be set free. The deer also forewarns the hunters that although she may appear tame, capturing her is dangerous and perilous, for as she is wild. The tone expressed throughout the sestet is â€Å"disappointment, frustration and dissatisfaction. † Throughout the entire sonnet, a shift of power has been experienced, as clearly the hind (woman) takes place in having authority over the men. This sonnet expresses â€Å"unconscious values of society† and is considered to be a very political sonnet during that period as the â€Å"men were considered to be active whilst the women were passive†. In conclusion, â€Å"Whoso List To Hunt† by Thomas Wyatt, a Petrarchan sonnet, is deemed to have been a political sonnet revolving around human values, power and statuses. The sonnet comprises of multiple themes such as unrequited love, sexism, complexity, obsession and passion.
